Wilderness Adjusting is an independent firm run by Albert Propst — independent adjuster, appraiser, umpire, estimator and expert witness.

Most people in this business learned buildings from a price list. Before insurance, Albert and his wife Melissa ran their own business for a decade — years spent cleaning commercial buildings, and flipping and renovating homes.
That is an unusual background for an adjuster and it shows up directly in the work: knowing what repairs actually cost, how trades sequence, why an assembly can't be spot-repaired, and where a scope written from photographs will miss things. An estimate is only as good as the documentation behind it — and knowing what to document comes from having done the work.
Appraiser, umpire, estimator, adjuster or expert — we fill exactly one of those on any given file. If we appraised a loss we will not umpire it. That discipline is what lets owners, carriers, IA firms and attorneys all use the same firm.
We are not a public adjuster. Public adjusters represent policyholders against carriers, typically for a percentage of the settlement. That is a legitimate business and a different one. Our work is independent — the number does not change based on who is paying for it, which is the only reason it is worth anything in an appraisal or on a witness stand.
Twenty-plus years of hiking, canoeing and ultra-running — and a Certified Maine Guide license earned the hard way. Every summer the family runs canoe trips in Maine. The wilderness rewards preparation and punishes shortcuts — which, as it turns out, is also true of claim files.
“An estimate is only as good as the documentation behind it. We scope every loss thoroughly and price it to the standard — so the number stands on its own.”
